about

I am very happy to release this new album in 2020 with a collection of new compositions for three different large ensembles which are connected in many ways. Since 2017, I have been doing my doctoral studies in Graz focusing on composing for large ensembles, and more specifically: on exploring this unique moment which we are living in as musicians of today. With blurred boundaries between genres and levels of musicianship unimaginable to the older generations, we now find ourselves in this unique moment with wider opportunities to create music.
As a composer, I feel the urgency to write music that reflects our times as artists. I had a beautiful time writing these pieces, which are dedicated to these great musicians who devote themselves to exploring the endless universe that is music. In this album, you will hear three different large ensembles that I had the pleasure of working with in the last two years. These ensembles are extensions of my nonet: Mereneu Project.
The Mereneu Project with Strings, is an ensemble featuring a beautiful group of eighteen strings players. The Mereneu Project Extended features instruments that are rarely associated with jazz such as the harp, oboe, French horn, and various classical percussion instruments. You will also hear my first live big band recording with the Mega Mereneu Project from the beautiful Bayerisches Jazzweekend Festival.
Concerning the pieces, each one of them has its own history. “For Astor” is inspired by the music of Astor Piazzolla and is dedicated to our Argentinian neighbours in South America.
“The Gard Nilssen Pattern” is based on a long rhythmic phrase that I learned from Gard himself in Poland at a free jazz workshop some years ago. Gard´s musical ideas have been a real inspiration for me.
“Afrika” is dedicated to our Brazilian roots which are grounded in the rhythm-based music of Africa.
“Balada para Brumadinho” is a homage to all the Brazilians who lost everything in the tragic events that occurred in Brumadinho city. I hope this will never be forgotten, and that those responsible will repair the damage they have caused to the people, and to the region as a whole.
“Mr Tappler” is a gift to Karl-Heinz Tappler, a french horn player who was consistently “lost” in the jazz department in Graz. He is a wonderful musician who is always interested in jazz and popular music, and in this piece you have the opportunity to hear his musical voice as a soloist.
“Relax” is the album farewell, and is almost entirely improvised. The composition was an attempt to hear the sound of freedom, to let all kinds of sounds into the air, and to collectively imagine what is going to happen next.
I would like to thank all those involved in the production of this album, my teachers, Bayerischer Rundfunk, Kust Uni Graz, and ÖH-KUG for your financial support.
Now I will let the music speak to you directly, and take you on this journey around my large ensemble world.
